25 May 08 - Heather in hospital Day 9

After a fitful night thanks to a party that was taking place close by, I got up an around 9:45am. I had a quick yoghurt and orange juice before heading off to the hospital.

Today’s nurse was Michelle and she was a lovely, chatty lady who filled me in with Heather’s overnight progress. She is still doing OK. She is breathing on her own with the ventilator on “spontaneous” mode, which means that it’s only assisting her with her breathing rather than doing all the breathing for her. Her chest still sounds clear, which is a vast improvement on recent days. She’s still absorbing the food she’s taking in, so she is receiving nourishment.

Michelle had a go at combing her hair earlier and managed to put her hair in her usual ponytail. She said that the other nurses were jealous of how thick her hair is and asked if she permed her hair. I told her that most of the time, Heather is trying to straighten the curls out!!

She is still not being sedated, as they are working to bring her around.

Her stats taken at 10:54am were as follows (all normal)

Heart Rate: 65
Blood Pressure: 133/65
Respiration rate: 22 breathes/min
Oxygen saturation: 97%
Oxygen being supplied: 40%
PEEP (Positive End Expiratory Pressure): 8
Temp: 38.4 degrees

The only thing they are not happy with is her temperature.

Her bloods are still OK, so she is fighting the infection. Go girl!!!

Just after 11am, they reduced her airway pressure. This means that she is going to have to do more work breathing for herself, but this will help her to come out of her deep sleep. In case she does wake up naturally, they have oxygen and a mask ready in case they can extubate her.

Mum, Martin and Heather’s parent all visited today. Also, my Dad came along with a friend of his, who also happens to be the sister in charge of the hospital at the weekends!!! She had a look at her and is also happy with her progress.

At about 3:45pm, Heather received some physio and got a bit of a clean up, so we took the opportunity to leave and let her have some rest.

Today, I’m feeling a little happier. Progress is good and hopefully, she’ll begin to wake up in the next couple of days.
